For no reason that I know of, I suddenly found that the audio was not working.
I accept not been doing anything to cause this. Came as an unpleasant surprise.
I have checked all the sound settings I am enlightened of, including Device Managing director
which checked and updated the drivers and said all was in perfect working order.
Gut feel ? Something simple, but I don't know what.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

I assume that you checked your default audio device in control panel/audio/playback ?
Is the correct device selected?
Does the meter evidence activity while you are playing sound?

I've had this happen with HP laptops...sounds but of a sudden disappeared. Downloading and installing the audio driver usually fixes it. This usually requires a reboot.

How can I find the precise driver name and where do I download it from ?

That will depend on the make of laptop. Is information technology an HP? Some manufactures (Dell, for example) accept a utility that tin can notice installed hardware, driver versions, BIOS, etc.
Best matter would be to go to the manufacturer's website. Is this a laptop or a desktop? An off-the-shelf arrangement or a custom build?

Information technology is a brand new ane calendar month one-time HP AIO desktop and the troubleshooting says the drivers are working perfect.
I am reluctant to uninstall such new drivers or exist too surgical.

Hi, this is a common enough problem, you should only get your peripheral drivers (Sound, Video, Net... etc) from the HP website. Most probable windows commuter updated your drivers, they will register every bit working from windows, withal equally you discovered they do not, rolling back, restored the HP drivers. To prevent this y'all need to:-
Press the win + r keys together, copy the below text into the run dialogue box:-
Rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL Sysdm.cpl,,two (press enter)
The "Organisation properties Hardware Tab" will open
Select "Device installation settings"
Put a check in box NO and salvage settings.(ignore the warning it is meaningless, needs to be done later every CU (quality update)

How-do-you-do, if y'all have an automated HP update installed yes, however if everything is working well, exercise not fuss over drivers besides much. You could manually go to the HP site, put your details in and download newer drivers if available, newer drivers oft contain security updates to align more effectively with the always moving service, that is windows x.

I may have been mistaken thinking that my drivers are HP,
the image shown appears to say they are Windows/Microsoft.
If this is and then, does it mean my set up has killed whatever further driver updates ?
But if I let Windows update these drivers, surely I will lose my sound again.
It looks a no-win situation.
Comments please.

I propose you do not download *whatsoever* commuter updates from Microsoft unless yous have to. Microsoft provides generic drivers for chipsets so that OEM manufacturers accept time to catch up to OS changes. Just turn off or disable driver updates in Windows update and stick to the ones available from your Laptop's manufacturer's support and download website.
It looks a no-win state of affairs.
No such thing in It. There is almost "always" a workaround or a solution to whatever given problem

Merely if I let Windows update these drivers, surely I will lose my sound again.I suggest y'all do non download *any* driver updates from Microsoft unless you lot take to. Microsoft provides generic drivers for chipsets and then that OEM manufacturers take time to catch up to Os changes. Merely turn off or disable driver updates in Windows update and stick to the ones available from your Laptop's manufacturer's back up and download website.
It looks a no-win state of affairs. No such thing in Information technology. There is almost "ever" a workaround or a solution to whatever given problem
That advice seems conclusive - thanks
